PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of obtaining a high-quality image, which has high resolution and high brightness and which is suppressed in color breakup, with a compact configuration.SOLUTION: The projector includes: laser diodes 2R, 2G, and 2B being light source emitting two or more coherent lights being color lights different from each other; a spatial optical modulation unit 7 having an incident area, on which the color lights are made to be incident, and modulating each color light made to be incident on the incident area according to an image signal; a deflection unit 4 deflecting the coherent lights from the light source parts; and a diffraction unit 5 diffracting the coherent lights from the deflection unit 4 so as to illuminate the spatial optical modulation unit 7 at a predetermined incident angle with respect to the incident area. The diffraction unit 5 includes two or more diffractive optical elements 14, 15 and 16 having a diffraction area formed for each color light. The deflection unit 4 changes timewise an angle for deflecting the coherent lights, and changes sequentially the diffractive optical elements 14, 15 and 16, on which the coherent lights are made to be incident, on each color light. |
