The method involves determining two variables from a reception signal, and defining a threshold value for the variables, where exceedance or falling below of the value represents a criterion for a covering condition or an idle condition of an oscillating unit. The variables are evaluated with respect to the value. A signal for signalizing the covering condition is generated in a precise manner when the variables fulfill the criterion for covering condition. A signal for signalizing the idle condition is generated in a precise manner when the variables fulfill the criterion for idle condition. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining and/or monitoring a limit level of liquid medium in a container.
