Encoding / decoding a prediction mode value related to a current coding unit (block) to be encoded / decoded comprises deriving two different prediction mode values from prediction modes of at least two neighbouring blocks (S401 & S402). A third, different, prediction mode value is derived from the two values (S403). This third value may be set to a value corresponding to a planar prediction mode if neither of the first or second values correspond to the planar prediction mode. Also, it may be set to a predefined value, e.g. horizontal or vertical prediction modes or adaptively derived based on mode probabilities, if the first or second value corresponds to a DC prediction mode and the other to a planar prediction mode. The value to be encoded / decoded is compared with at least one of the first, second and third mode values (S404). An encoding / decoding process is selected based on the comparison. A first process (S405) is selected when the mode value to be encoded /decoded is equal to at least one of the three values, and a second process (S406) is selected when not. |
