A method of making a golf bunker 1 comprises creating a cavity 2 in the ground, creating drain 3 to lead water away from the cavity, applying a substantially water impermeable membrane 5A on the surface of said cavity which leads water to said drain, applying a sand retaining layer 5B on said membrane, and applying a layer of sand 6 on the sand retaining layer. Preferably the sand retaining layer is formed from monofilament fibres or ribbons and the water impermeable membrane is formed from warp and fill backing. Optionally the sand retaining layer and water impermeable membrane are formed as a single sheet of material. The single sheet of material may be Astroturf (RTM). The invention also relates to golf bunker made by the method.
