There is provided a bed-couch (105) including an upper supporting surface for receiving person. The bed-couch (105) is operable to provide a flexible support characteristic at th upper surface for supporting the person. The bed-couch (105) comprises an array of spatially distributed spring elements (220) for providing the flexible support characteristic, the array of distributed spring elements (220) having mutual spatial separations which ar adjustable for affecting in operation a continuously-variable adjustment of the flexible suppor characteristic. Adjustment of the flexible support characteristic in response to use requirements enables the bed-couch (105) to provide an enhanced degree of user comfort.
