A multifunction rotary control device for controlling a system provides control signals to the system responsive to actuation of a manually operable rotary means 112 and a switch 110S. A display 116 displays information of a plurality of operational modes of the system and presents the information to a user for viewing within a circular area of the device, centered on an axis of rotation A of the rotary means and of radius equal to the distance from the axis to its radially outer boundary. The rotary means can be a knob; circular; gripped by a users hand and comprise a lever (fig 8, 212). The switch can be a mechanical switch and operated by pressing the knob, the display or a window 117 through which the display is viewed. The display can comprise a touch screen, which can provide the switch; be fixed in orientation while the rotary means rotates; and be within a circular area inward of the rotary means. Plural user input modes and control functions can be selected and controlled by the switch and rotary means in combination. The control device can control a system such as a climate control, including functions of ventilation, air temperature, and seat heating/cooling temperature in a motor vehicle. |
