The invention relates to an orthopedic fixation system, which has an anchor element (16, 17) that can be anchored to a bone, and which can be connected to a further anchor element by means of a stabilizing element (24), wherein the anchor element comprises a stabilizing element receptacle (42) in which the stabilizing element can be inserted, and having an elongating device (20, 21) comprising a longitudinal extension for the anchor element having a proximal segment (49) and a distal segment (48), said distal segment being releasably fixable to the anchor element. In order to provide such a fixation system allowing easier aligning of the anchor elements and the stabilizing element relative to each other, and thereby allowing easier inserting of the stabilizing element in the stabilizing element receptacle, the fixation system comprises a retaining device (27, 30, 32) having a probe receptacle (65) for an extracorporeal ultrasonic probe, and a coupling device (77) for coupling the retaining device to the proximal segment of the elongation device.
