PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for controlling a vehicle, which improves fuel consumption and also prevents the occurrence of shock when a lock-up clutch engages.SOLUTION: The apparatus for controlling a vehicle has: a torque converter; an engine; a lock-up clutch engagement device; an engine load adjuster; and a fuel injection controller. The torque converter has the lock-up clutch. The lock-up clutch engagement device performs an engagement of the lock-up clutch in response to decrease of accelerator opening. The engine load adjuster reduces a load applied to the engine, which gradually inclines a reduction of engine speed based on the decrease of accelerator opening.
