Provided is a process for producing a modified conjugated diene polymer which gives a vulcanizate that has an excellent balance between low hysteresis loss characteristics and wet skid resistance and that has practically sufficient wear resistance and fracture strength and has excellent processability. The process for producing a modified conjugated diene polymer comprises: a polymerization step in which either a conjugated diene compound or a combination of a conjugated diene compound and an aromatic vinyl compound is polymerized or copolymerized using an alkali metal compound or alkaline-earth metal compound as a polymerization initiator to obtain a conjugated diene polymer having an active end; and a modification step in which a compound represented by formula (1) is reacted with the active end of the conjugated diene copolymer.
