The present invention is generally directed to lithium ion batteries. More specifically, it is directed to lithium ion batteries that provide for rapid recharge, longer battery life and inherently safe operation. In a battery aspect, the present invention provides a battery that includes the following elements: an anode comprising nano-crystalline LiTiO having a BET surface area of at least 10 m/g; a cathode comprising nano- crystalline LMnO spinel having a BET surface area of at least 5 m/g. The battery has a charge rate of at least 10C. |
