[Also in Group XXV] In making assemblies of nuts with toothless lock washers the nuts are produced with axial extensions 16, Fig. 5, of frusto-conical form with small flanges 26 at right angles to the conical surface. The washers with S-shaped annular centres 18 are slipped on to the extension and connection is made by a conical tube expander 32, Fig. 6, that renders the extensions cylindrical and flares the ends of the bores so that on tapping, as the final production step, the extensions are not weakened or cut away. The washers are free to rotate on the extensions.
