Embodiments of the invention include a method in a network device having a random access memory, a nonvolatile random access memory and a flash memory, the method including operating in a network switch/router mode of operation, operating in a network adapter mode of operation and switching in between the network switch/router operation and the network adapter operation in response to receiving a device configuration signal.
