The present invention provides a method and apparatus for video authentication of a user. Said method mainly includes the following steps: receiving an authentication photo submitted by the user, shooting continuous real-time video of the user via a video camera mounted on the client of the user, and synthesizing a comparison picture according to the real-time video data. Then, comparing the authentication photo with the comparison picture, and determining the result of the video authentication of the user according to the comparison result. By utilizing the present invention, video authentication of a user can be implemented accurately and in time, which effectively prevents a user from forging an authentication photo using a virtual camera.
