681,514. Distilling zinc. NEW JERSEY ZINC CO. Nov. 6, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1950], No. 27072/50. Class 82(i) Oxidic zinciferous material is smeltered in an electric arc furnace with carbonaceous reducing material so that the zinc vapour produced is substantially free from dust-forming impurities and the slag is substantially zinc-free. The zinciferous and carbonaceous materials are charged into the furnace in a loose, dry condition and in such relative amounts as to effect reduction of at least a major portion of the zinc component of the charge and of at least such a portion of any iron component present in the zinciferous material to preclude the presence in the molten slag of more than 6 per cent by weight of iron oxide (calculated as Fe). The slag produced from the above smelting must contain not more than 85 per cent by weight of CaO and SiO 2 , in a ratio of between 0.9:1 and 1.2:1 and not exceeding, with respect to the total amount of the other constituents of the slag, the ratio represented by the line AB. The slag is maintained in a molten condition at a temperature of at least 125‹C by electric arc heating and the charge is smelted on the surface of the slag at a temperature not in excess of 1450‹C. The charge component may be fed separately, in simple admixture or as agglomerates. The zinc vapour may be condensed in a condenser as described in Specifications 601,246, 601,247, 620,644, 648,529 and 657,205.
|
