The method involves utilizing kinetic information of a motor vehicle (10) and a drive motor (13) of the motor vehicle, where the kinetic information includes information of longitudinal displacement speed of the motor vehicle and information about rotation speed of wheels (14, 15) of the motor vehicle. The ratio of the kinetic information of the motor vehicle and the drive motor is compared with values stored in a memory. The values stored in the memory characterize different gear ratios of a transmission system (18).
