The speed drive (10) has a controlled speed-limiting device (21) limiting authorized maximum speed for rotatably driving an output shaft (3) carrying a pulley (15) of the speed drive. The controlled speed-limiting device is equipped with selection controllers i.e. cable controllers (23), that controls selection of the maximum speed authorized by the speed-limiting device. Transmission elements transmit movement between a primary motor shaft (2) and the output shaft that drives wheels (4) of a variable forward speed self-propelled machine (1). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling displacement of a variable forward speed self-propelled machine.
