The method involves determining speed from combination of detected signals of a rotation speed sensor and a wheel speed sensor. The speed is determined on basis of combination rotation speed from two rotation speeds under consideration of translation of inserted gears. Two different speed ranges in which influence of the two rotation speeds is varied, are determined using weighting factors that are moved in opposite directions. The speed ranges are overlapped by the weighting factors depending on a sign of a speed gradient hysteresis.
