<p>This disclosure relates to an image processing apparatus and method that can suppress the reduction of encoding efficiency caused by enhancing the speed of image encoding. An image processing apparatus for encoding image data comprises: an encoding unit for encoding the image data of vertically aligned large areas of an image in such a manner that each large area is divided into small areas horizontally aligning in small-area lines and that, for the small-area lines, the encoding order of the small areas is coincident with the scan order, while the encoding order of the small-area lines is different from the scan order; and a control unit for controlling the encoding unit in such a manner that the encoding is performed in accordance with the state of a left small area located on the left periphery of a small area to be processed and further in accordance with the state of an under small area located on the under periphery of the small area to be processed. This technique is applicable to, for example, an image processing apparatus.</p> |
