PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device capable of achieving low power consumption, high efficiency of light emission, and longer lifetime.SOLUTION: The light emitting device 10 includes an airtight container 1 for enclosing a gas, an electron emitter 2 for supplying electrons into the gas, a phosphor layer 3 formed in the airtight container 1, an electron collection electrode 4 for collecting electrons, and a voltage application unit 5 for applying voltage to the electrode. The voltage application unit 5 emits electrons from the electron emitter 2 by applying drive voltage between a surface electrode 22 and a lower electrode 21 of the electron emitter 2. Furthermore, the voltage application unit 5 makes the electron collection electrode 4 collect electrons by applying collection voltage, wherein the electron collection electrode 4 is set at a high potential side, between the electron collection electrode 4 and the surface electrode 22. The voltage application unit 5 controls voltage to be applied so as to alternately replace the magnitude relationship of the drive voltage applied between the surface electrode 22 and the lower electrode 21 and the collection voltage applied between the electron collection electrode 4 and the surface electrode 22. |
