PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure fuel pump control system for an internal combustion engine, allowing control to a target fuel pressure without sacrificing a fuel cut time by using pressure reducing characteristics of a high pressure fuel pump.SOLUTION: The high pressure fuel pump control system for the internal combustion engine includes a fuel injection valve provided in a fuel common rail and the high pressure fuel pump for feeding fuel under pressure to the fuel injection valve. The high pressure fuel pump includes a pressurization chamber, a plunger for pressurizing fuel in the pressurization chamber, a discharge valve provided in a discharge passage, an intake valve provided in an intake passage, and an actuator for operating the intake valve. The control system includes a calculator for calculating a drive signal for the actuator to vary a discharge amount or pressure of the high pressure fuel pump. The calculator for calculating the drive signal reduces pressure in the common rail by opening the discharge valve to return the fuel in the fuel common rail to the pressurization chamber when reduction of the pressure in the fuel common rail is demanded. |
