687,550. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 6, 1951 [July 19, 1950], No. 16088/51. Class 35. A machine for use in high altitude aircraft has the windings completely submerged in liquid, at least part of which is allowed to reach the commutator, the liquid being circulated in a closed system which includes an external cooler. As shown, the commutator 120 and the brushgear 122 are in a compartment formed by members 133, 136 such that most of the liquid is kept out but the liquid fills the rest of the machine and is passed through a heat-exchanger 127, 129, the cooling medium of which may be the fuel for propelling the aircraft. In a modification the liquid has complete access to the commutator as well as the remainder of the machine. The liquid may be ethyl glycol, halogenated diphenyl, tributyl phosphate or an oil und also reduces deterioration of the brushes. Specification 17716/11, [Class 35], is referred to. |
