<p>Disclosed is a method and apparatus for repairing scratch impairments on an input image. Brightness values for a set of points within a narrow band aligned with a scratch impairment on an image are modified. Said modified points are compared 217 with brightness values of impaired points and a measure produced. A scratch repair process is then controlled 219 based on said measurement. The control may be such that a measure that does not correspond to an expected measure inhibits the repair process. The measure may be used to predict the expected brightness error due to a scratch point and the repair process is limited based on said predicted error. The relationship between the impaired brightness value and the corresponding modified values may be modelled mathematically with statistically derived parameters (for example using linear regression).
