A sensor system includes a sensor module for generating a sensor signal representing each of one or more characteristics, such as orthogonal axis components of orientation or magnetic characteristics. The sensor signal includes a plurality of complementary signals each representing a characteristic and for each characteristic each complementary signal is representative of a different sensing orientation of the characteristic. A controller generates a control signal for selecting successive sensing orientations and a signal processing module generates an output signal from the complementary signals for providing a measurement value of the characteristics by combining the complementary signals associated with different sensing orientations. The controller and signal processing module attenuate signals outside a frequency band determined by a frequency of the selection of successive sensing orientations. The system is used for determining orientation and can use two three axis accelerometers 122 and 124 and a three axis fluxgate magnetometer for sensing. Combining the complementary signals reduces the effects of error components in the complementary signals. |
