Classes 20(i) and 20(iv) An inflatable structural element 3 for use e.g. as a rigid beam, a temporary building structure, or a roof portion of a building, comprises two plies, of fluid-impervious woven fabric 6, 7, the plies being joined by tie threads 8 so that on inflating the element 3, e.g. with air, or gas,. under slight pressure, the fabrics are uniformly spaced. The member 3 is preferably formed of a number of identical abutting sections which are joined by junctions 5. Each junction 5 comprises an element 12 made of two fabric strips 13, 13, which are sewn together at 14 and have their ends folded back and adhesively secured to the plies 6, 7. Tapes 15, 16 at the top and bottom reinforce the junction. The plies 6, 7 of the element are sealed together around the edges of the element 3 by means of rubber fabric strips 10, 11 At least one inflating valve 33 is secured, by means of a fabric sleeve 18, into each section of the element 3, the ends of the sleeves being folded back and bonded to the plies 7, 8. Collars 19, 20 are bonded to the sleeve, the upper collar being covered by a patch 23 and the flange 21 of the valve being bonded to the collar 20. The valve flange 21 is covered by a reinforcement 22. One, or more, inflatable stiffening members 4, each having a valve 33, are secured at right-angles to the element 3, the end of the plies 26, 27 of each stiffener along one edge being folded inwardly and bonded to the ply 7 of the element 3. Tapes 29. 30 reinforce the joint. The full edges of the stiffeners are sealed by a fabric strip 31. A number of cable stabilizers 35 are secured by means of saddle tapes 39 at spaced intervals along the free edges of several stiffeners 4, the ends of the stabilizers 35 being anchored to the member 3 by a ring 36 and a loop 37 assembly. An alternative structure, in the form of rigid' beams 40, Fig. 3, and embodying similar features to the structure shown in Fig. 2, serves to support a fabric 41.
