Disclosed is a mobile telephone system which is provided with a mobile phone, and an external terminal which communicates with the mobile phone. The mobile telephone has an external communication unit which communicates with the external terminal, and a public network communication unit which communicates with a telephone at the other end of the communication. The external terminal has an image display unit, and a communication unit which communicates with the external communication unit of the mobile telephone. The mobile telephone system has: a telephone information storage means wherein telephone information about the other end of the communication is stored; a telephone information acquisition means which stores, in the telephone information storage means, telephone information about the other end of communication when an incoming call comes from a telephone at the other end of communication; a means for confirming display is possible at an external terminal, said means determining whether or not the external terminal is in a state where display is possible; a standby-mode setting means which, when the external terminal is in a state where display is possible, generates standby-mode notification information which notifies the fact that the mobile phone is in a standby-mode wherein a received message can be displayed by the external terminal, and transmits said information to the mobile telephone which is at the other end of the communication; and a message display means, which, when the mobile phone has received a message, displays the message by means of the image display unit.
