PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material that does not contain expensive noble metals or alloys thereof, such as platinum and a platinum alloy, and is suitable for an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell and the like.SOLUTION: The carbon material is obtained by firing a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl borate monomer containing ≥50 mol% acrylonitrile component and ≥1 mol% vinyl borate monomer component in an inert gas atmosphere at 500-1,500°C. The acrylonitrile component in the copolymer preferably has an isotactic triad content of ≥15 mol% based on the total acrylonitrile component.
