Disclosed is a control device for an automatic transmission, wherein, when a clutch control means (24) controls a clutch (C-1) in a non-engagement state and an automatic transmission mechanism (5) in a neutral state, a lockup control means (25) brings a lockup clutch into an engagement state. When an operation for starting a vehicle is detected, the lockup control means (25) brings the lockup clutch into an engagement state in a slip range in which the lockup clutch has a predetermined torque capacity, and the clutch control means (24) controls the clutch (C-1) in a slip control state, to control the start of the vehicle. The lockup clutch is brought into an engagement state before starting the vehicle and, accordingly, the rotation number of an engine (2) is prevented from rapidly increasing immediately after the vehicle is started. Furthermore, the lockup clutch is stably in an engagement state and, accordingly, shocks are prevented from occurring.
