PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-field light-generating element which pumps many surface plasmons and concentrates the surface plasmons to a near-field light-generating part by forming a tip for forming the near-field light-generating part at the upper end of a front end face.SOLUTION: The near-field light-generating element 16 has an outer surface including a bottom surface 16a, a waveguide facing surface 16b, the front end face 16c, and a side surface 16d. The front end face 16c includes a first side 16c1 that lies at an end of the bottom surface 16a, the tip 16c4 that lies at an end farther from the top surface of the substrate and forms the near-field light-generating part 16g, a second side 16c2 that connects an end of the first side 16c1 to the tip 16c4, and a third side 16c3 that connects the other end of the first side 16c1 to the tip 16c4. The waveguide facing surface 16b includes a width changing portion that has a width in a direction parallel to the bottom surface 16a and the front end face 16c, the width decreasing with a decreasing distance to the front end face 16c. |
