POLYMER FOR USE IN A LIQUID-CRYSTAL ALIGNMENT LAYER

Disclosed is a material for aligning a liquid crystal in a liquid-crystal display element. Said material is a polymer used in the manufacture of a liquid-crystal vertical alignment layer. Said polymer is characterized by having: (a) sites that are photochemically isomerizable and not photochemically cross-linked; (b) sites that are photochemically cross-linkable; and (c) sites that stabilize vertical orientation. Said polymer: can orient a liquid crystal in such a way that is controllable with a small amount of ultraviolet light; has a large pretilt angle; and is highly photostable.
