Disclosed are intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus stem cells and progenitor cells that can be used in the therapy of intervertebral disc injury. The intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus cells are characterized by being isolated from the intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus of a vertebrate, and by being positive for at least one surface marker from among Tie2 and GD2. In other words, provided are intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus stem cells that are characterized by the surface markers being at least Tie2-positive, and by having the ability to self replicate as well as pluripotency, being able to differentiate into adipocytes, osteocytes, chondrocytes, and neurons; and provided are intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus progenitor cells that are characterized by the surface markers being Tie2-positive and GD2-positive, and by being able to differentiate into any of adipocytes, osteocytes, chondrocytes, or neurons.
