PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit of side edge type capable of fine area active control, and to provide an image display device using the same.SOLUTION: The side edge type backlight unit is provided with a light guide plate, a plurality of light sources which make light incident into the light guide plate, and a lighting controller which turns on selectively the plurality of light sources. The light guide plate is divided into a plurality of areas, the light sources are arranged corresponding to each area of the light guide plate, a light emitting portion having a reflection surface to reflect the light incident from the light source is formed in each area, a normal of the reflection surface is directed in a plurality of different directions, and the reflection surface of the light emitting portion formed in every area is opposed to the light source arranged corresponding to the area. |
