PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cracking heavy hydrocarbon oil which can efficiently manufacture light hydrocarbon oil from heavy hydrocarbon oil, using a catalyst which has good activity, without using high-pressure hydrogen gas.SOLUTION: The method for cracking heavy hydrocarbon oil is to crack heavy hydrocarbon oil to produce light hydrocarbon oil, by bringing heavy hydrocarbon oil having a weight-average molecular weight of 500 or more, into contact with a catalyst in the presence of water, the method characterized in that the catalyst contains a group 4A element in an amount of 10 mass% or more, and the weight-average molecular weight of the light hydrocarbon oil is half or less than half of that of the heavy hydrocarbon oil. |
