The present invention relates to methods for treating cancer by administering to a mammalian subject a therapeutically effective amount of a selectiveβ5 integrin antagonist. The present invention also relates to methods of treating a human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) positive tumor by administering to a mammalian subject a therapeutically effective amount of aβ5 integrin antagonist and a HER-2 antagonist and further relates to compositions of the aforementioned antagonists. Theβ5 integrin antagonist can directly inhibit tumor growth by directly inhibiting the activity or the expression ofβ5 integrin in aβ5 integrin-expressing tumor cell.
