PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which effectively enables an image to be visually recognized.SOLUTION: Optical modulation devices 250A and 250B included in the image display device respectively emit formed image light as linearly polarized light beams S and P whose polarization directions are perpendicular to each other. First pixels forming the first image light and second pixels forming the second image light are arranged alternately in at least one direction in each of the optical modulation devices 250A and 250B. Retardation layers 5 are disposed on the light emission side of the first pixels or second pixels, wherein the retardation layers 5 are configured to convert one of the respective linearly polarized light beams S and P into the other linearly polarized light beam. Arrangement of the first pixels and the second pixels is set to be reverse in the optical modulation device 250A and the optical modulation device 250B. Arrangement of the retardation layers 5 is set to be the same in the optical modulation device 250A and the optical modulation device 250B. |
