The device has a receptacle supported on a rail-bound carrier vehicle, and an inner electromagnet (20) and outer electromagnets (22, 24) for cleaning a track bed (2) from ferromagnetic contamination. The elongated active magnetic pole surface area (26), whose long side is aligned along travel direction, where length of the magnetic pole surface area is 1.2 m. The outer electro magnets are arranged outside rails (4) above the track bed, and the inner electromagnet is arranged within the rails above the track bed. An independent claim is also included for a method for cleaning a railway track.
