The method involves recognizing workpieces (17, 18) automatically by receiving and evaluating an image of the workpieces, where the workpieces are arranged in a measuring area of a coordinate measuring apparatus (1). A measuring procedure is assigned to each recognized workpiece, and the measuring procedure assigned to the respective recognized workpiece is started automatically. A surface area of the workpiece is scanned by a tracer (7) of the coordinate measuring apparatus in a tactile manner. Position and/or alignment of the workpieces are recognized automatically. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for measuring coordinates of a workpiece.
