The system (10) has a lighting unit (24) provided with a luminous element i.e. LED, and operated during normal and emergency conditions. The lighting unit is connected with an alternating current (AC) power source (12) through a switching element (18) e.g. transformer. The switching element comprises a switch (20) for switching ON and OFF operation of the luminous element. The switching element generates and transmits a control signal to the lighting unit, and operates the luminous element based on the control signal and a position of the switch during normal or emergency conditions. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lighting system that is connected to an AC source.
