An actuator and method for adjusting the length of extensible members attached to a table (1, fig 1), the actuator comprising a driving mechanism having an electric motor 21 which drives rotary members 23 via a worm 22 engaging worm gears 27 on the rotary members 23. Elongate flexible members 24 are wound around and engage the rotary members 23 so that as the motor 21 drives the rotary members 23 in a first direction or a second direction the elongate flexible members 24 are extended or retracted. The elongate flexible members 24 are supported by a constraint means which transmits force from the actuator to the extensible members or telescopic legs (8 & 9) in order to adjust their length and thereby a height of the table (1). Brakes and limit switches are provided in order to prevent the rotary members 23 from rotating when the motor 21 is not driving and to stop the motor 21. Claims are also directed to a method of adjusting a height of an object. |
