An antenna 270 suitable for underwater communications comprises an elongate section submerged in water. The said elongate section has at least one electrically insulated flexible conductive wire portion 281, 282 which is attached to an underwater object 223 at a first end. During deployment the antenna 270 hangs downward and is arranged in a substantially vertical orientation. When in use, the said antenna radiates electromagnetic signals through the water. The second end of the elongate section may be attached to a ballast weight 274 of a suitable density to keep the antenna 270 vertical within plus or minus twenty degrees. The antenna 270 may be end fed or fed at any point between either ends of the antenna 270. Coaxial or balanced feed signal lines 272 may connect the antenna 270 to a transceiver 275. The antenna 270 may include built in balun, counterpoise and conductive screen formations. The antenna 270 may be used in oil drilling and/or production facilities or remotely operated vehicles. The antenna 270 may be deployed and/or retracted using a remotely controlled motorized reel mechanism.
