A gas regulating valve for use with a breathing assistance device and to be interposed in a gas transmission duct of the breathing assistance device proximal to the patient, includes a casing having proximal and distal portions coaxially coupled together to form a passage through which a supply of pressurized gas may circulate from a gas source to a patient. A leakage orifice 931 to atmosphere is formed in the proximal portion and an obstruction element including a movable element 9225 coupled to an obstructing piece 9271 is capable of varying the opening of the leakage orifice. A controller controls the movement of the obstruction piece. The movable element surrounds the passage and is constructed to be sealed from the supply of pressurized gas in the passage.
