Process for the production of benzopyran-2-ol derivatives useful in preparation of tolterodine, fesoterodine and other pharmaceutically useful compounds

Disclosed is a process for the production of a compound of formula (I), wherein Y is selected from CH3, CH2OH, CH2CH2OH, CH2Br and Br, involving reacting a compound of formula (II) with trans-cinnamaldehyde (III) in the presence of a secondary amine compound in which the product is then treated with acid to afford the compound of formula (I) wherein the substituents relating to preceding compounds are defined in the specification. Also disclosed is a process for the production of formula (IV) or a salt thereof involving the steps of, producing compound of formula (I) via said process noted above, followed by reductively aminating the compound of formula (I) with dissopropylamine and where desired converting the resulting compound into a salt. Furthermore, a process for the production of fesoterodine using the prepared compounds as recited herein is also disclosed.
