The system has a milling unit including milling tools (400, 500) that remove material from a surface (20) of a base element (22), under the control of a control unit. The tools have drive units (40, 50) that rotatably drive rotary cutters (4, 5) around tool axes (41, 51), respectively. The tools have guiding units (401, 501) that displace the respective cutters in a milling plane orthogonal to a rotation axis (31) under the control of the control unit, to regulate the quantity of the removed material by the cutters during rotation of the element around the rotation axis. An independent claim is also included for a method for machining pieces by milling.
