Disclosed is a bivalent mimetic of formula (II) or a compound of formula (XIII) which contains a pyrrolidine ring fused to a 6-8 membered ring where the variables are as defined in the specification. Also disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (II) or (XIII), a kit comprising a compound of formula (II) or (XIII) and the use of a compound of formula (II) or (XIII) for the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for treating a disorder responsive to the induction of apoptosis in an animal or treating hyperproliferative disease.
