Provided is a method for predicting cardiac toxicity in a patient selected for treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, said method comprising: identifying a cell population or serum sample obtained from a patient selected for treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, screening the cell population or serum sample for a fatty acid oxidation disorder; and determining whether a fatty acid oxidation disorder exists in the cell population or serum sample, whereby the presence of a fatty acid oxidation disorder in the cell population or serum sample predicts that the patient will likely exhibit cardiac toxicity in response to treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, for example erbB inhibitor or trastuzumab.
