The hydrogen generation device comprises an enclosure (2) containing pellets (6) made of a material for releasing hydrogen under thermal stress, a closed loop system for pressure controlling the hydrogen within the enclosure, a nanoporous ceramic matrix filter (56) for filtration of hydrogen, a resistive system (10) for independently heating the pellets, and a microprocessor that controls the closed loop system of the heating system. The pellets are encapsulated on a removable plate that is shifted to charge the device. An independent claim is included for a process for generating hydrogen.
