Disclosed are tricyclic compounds containing at least one oxo group on a pyrrolidine ring which is fused to a bicyclic aromatic ring system as shown in formula (II) where the variables are as defined in the disclosure and it could be a benzosuccinamide. Also disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (II); the use of a compound of formula (II) in the manufacture of a medicament for treating the proliferation of HIV virus, treating AIDS, or delaying the onset of AIDS or ARC symptoms and a fit comprising a compound of formula (II).
