The method involves disengaging an end of a secondary shaft (2). A control gauge (20) is fixed at the end of the secondary shaft. A differential crown (10) is maintained in a blocked position by a blocking unit i.e. threaded pin. A gear backlash measurement is carried out by causing angular displacement of the secondary shaft inside the gear backlash, while measuring angular displacement of the control gauge. The angular displacement of the control gauge is measured based on dimensions of an output pinion (8). An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring a gear backlash of an automobile transmission.
