The invention comprises bis - (2 - hydroxy-3(a ) - alkylcycloalkyl - 5 - methylphenyl) - methanes in which the cycloalkyl groups, which may be the same or different, are cyclopentyl, methylcyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or methylcyclohexyl and the alkyl substituent has not more than 4 carbon atoms and is attached to the a -carbon atoms of the cycloalkyl group, i.e. the carbon atom which is joined to the phenyl radical; and the preparation thereof by (1) combining, in the presence of an acid condensing agent, 1 molecular proportion of p-cresol with 1 molecular proportion of an a -alkylcyclopentene, methyl - a - alkylcyclopentene, a - alkylcyclohexene or methyl-a -alkylcyclohexene in which the alkyl substituent has not more than 4 carbon atoms followed by (2) reacting 2 molecular proportions of the 2-a -alkylcycloalkyl-4-methylphenol so obtained with one molecular proportion of formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde, in the presence of an acid condensing agent. As an alternative for the second stage, one molecular proportion of the 2-a -alkylcycloalkyl-4-methyl phenol is condensed with one molecular proportion of formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst and the resulting product combined with one molecular proportion of same p-cresol derivative in the presence of an acid-condensing agent or said p-cresol derivative is substituted by a chloromethyl group by reacting it with one molecular proportion of formaldehyde in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen chloride and the resulting chloromethyl derivative is then condensed with a second molecule of the p-cresol derivative. Examples describe the preparation of (1) bis-(2 - hydroxy - 3 - a - methylcyclohexyl - 5-methylphenyl)-methane; (2) bis - (2 - hydroxy-3 - a - methylcyclopentyl - 5 - methyphenyl)-methane; (3) bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - a d , - dimethylcyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl) - methane; (4) bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - a - ethylcyclohexyl - 5-methylphenyl) - methane, (5) bis - (2 - hydroxy-3 - a - n - butylcyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl)-methane; and (6) 2 : 21-dihydroxy-3-a -methylcyclopentyl - 31 - a - methylcyclohexyl - 5 : 51-dimethyldiphenylmethane.
