PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium feeder taking into consideration multi feed problem and nonfeed problem when fed media have different stiffnesses. SOLUTION: The medium feeder (2) includes: a mounting section 11; a feed means (3); and a separation means 12 having a tilted surface (13). The feed means includes a feed roller (3) displaceable in a feed direction Y. As a reaction force against a force (F) to feed the fed media downwardly in the feed direction which the driving feed roller (3) exerts on the fed media (P), a force (R) to displace the feed roller upstream in the feed direction is exerted from the fed media (P) to the feed roller (3). When the dimension of the reaction force (R) is larger than the dimension of a predetermined force (R1+R2 in case of P2), the feed roller (3) is displaced upward in the feed direction by the reaction force.
