The invention relates to a cutter suction dredger (10) for dredging ground under water. The dredger comprises a vessel (1) provided with anchoring means (101a, 101b) for anchoring to the ground, and with a ladder (2) that can be lowered into the water in front of the vessel under an oblique angle with the vessel and to which is attached a cutter head (202) that in operation is moved through the ground (9) in a lateral sweeping movement by hauling the vessel alternately from portside to starboard side and thereby loosens ground fragments that are sucked away by a suction conduit (4). The vessel further comprises means (14a, 14b) adapted to measure the depth of the under water ground after this ground has been dredged. The invention also relates to a method for dredging using the cutter suction dredger. A cutter suction dredger and method are provided that allow to dredge an under water bottom efficiently.
